Big John’s Furniture has been a mainstay of downtown LaGrange since 1988.  Our original location was at 111 W. Lafayette St in the old Studebaker Garage.  John T. and Dolores Gilmore purchased the building and decided to open a furniture store.  Also then the owners of Mom’s Restaurant, John became known throughout the county as “Big John” and from there Big John’s Furniture was born!

From the beginning, Big John’s Furniture offered quality furniture and excellent customer service.  In order to make furniture affordable to everyone,  Big John’s started offering in-store financing.  With our low down payment and low monthly payments, everyone could afford the furniture they deserved.                              

Over the years, we have added to our product line.  Offering living room, bedroom, dining room, appliances, and electronics.  In 1993, Big John’s Furniture purchased the old Sears Catalog Store at 110 S. Detroit St.  This gave Big John’s the space they needed to better serve the community.

In 1994 Big John’s son, John S. Gilmore, joined the furniture store full-time .  Working together, Big John and son dedicated their lives to serving LaGrange County through their support of various civic and service organizations.  “A small community is like a family, everyone must work together to help each other”  states John S. Gilmore.

“Big John” Gilmore passed away in 2001, but his legacy lives on with his son and Big John’s Furniture.  A happy addition to the Big John’s family arrived in May of 2001 when John and his wife Tara were blessed with their twins Johnathan and Madison.  Their daughter Christine joined their family in 2006.

“LaGrange is a wonderful place to grow-up, live, work, run a business, and raise a family,” states John S. Gilmore.  “We have made so many friends and our customers have become a part of our extended family over the years.  We have shared the joys and laughter along with the sorrow and tears with many of our customers.  To me, that is why LaGrange is such a special place.”
